Steininger laid the foundations for his artistic career with both studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and Linz. He harnesses the inherent qualities of his materials by using their textural appeal to create layers and depth and to encourage emotive and subjective responses in the viewer. My investigation is based on the visual and spatial relationships between painting and sculpture. I assemble complex air-supported wall-mounted works in which the surface the embossed lines are individual bas-reliefs and give rise to abstract or pictorial compositions, tracing and embossing the dotted lines and shapes directly onto the vinyl layers itself. I turn the physical components of the artwork into inside/outside. The hybrid sculpture-paintings are air bas-reliefs, which are precisely built up with the suppleness of various layered flexible plastic films, layer by layer with creative qualities and shaped with air. The resulting image objects create the physical presence and, through their material nature and the characteristic pure character of the air, claim a formal relationship to the physicality. These are described as Soft-Sculptures with sophisticated aesthetics that are unique in their interplay of lights and shadows, innovative use of industrial materials, and the integration of translucent and/or opaque monochrome colors with form. My artwork deals with the aspects and meanings of the medium air, examining their manifestations. Air enters our body with the first breath and with death, we exhale the last breath. Each sculpture is a transformation of pure air. Interested in a hybrid painting's potential to create with the medium air the form of an actual object to function as the very embodiment of the object it depicts, the essential qualities of air. Referencing in the tradition of the ZERO avant-garde and minimalist abstraction, the bas-relief monochrome multi-layer ‘paintings’ are informed by a desire to explore anti-forms of representation. In essence of the medium air, their subject becomes the interplay between two and three dimensions, as experienced via shifts in surface, structure, and depth.
